Miles
Canyon is located 2 miles south of Whitehorse. Take Robert Service
Way, and turn left on Schwatka Lake Road, just past the Robert Service
Campground. The Robert Lowe pedestrian bridge allows hikers to examine
both sides of the canyon. Fairly placid now, the canyon gained notoriety
for several rapids' potential destruction of Klondike Gold Rushers
dreams. The water level is higher now, but those severe walls still
show how difficult it would have been to avoid disaster in wildly
churning waters. These gold seekers had already struggled up Chilkoot
Pass, from Dyea, scavenged timber to build boats at Lake Bennett;
and they would face more challenges down river and in the Klondike
Gold Fields. |
