In
late 1897, when the dangers of Yukon River became evident, two companies
quickly built log track tramways on each side of the river. They ran
through the crush of the Klondike Gold Rush until 1900. Small boats
and goods were transferred around the rapids this way. Larger water
craft still had to run the rapids guided by an experienced pilot.
The White Pass & Yukon Railway laid tracks through the area in
1900 ending the tramway business and Canyon City. A replica of a tram
car rests on log tracks, top right. |
