Watson
Lake Airport started as a small airstrip in the 1930s. By 1941 it
was part of the Northwest Staging Route that Canada developed as an
air route across northwestern Canada to Alaska. The US Army chose
to follow this path in constructing the AlCan. As a supply depot,
they built many log structures. The main air terminal building, top
left, and right center, was built in 1942. The hanger is the last
of this type in Canada. Left; view of Watson Lake from the airport,
which sits at the lake's north margin. |
