The
small community of Beaver Creek, home of the White River First Nation,
is also the farthest west town in Canada. It's 184 miles west of Haines
Junction, and 20 miles east of the Yukon - Alaska border. The eastern
and western sections of the AlCan joined here on Beaver Creek, just
east of town. On October 28, 1942 vehicles could start traveling the
entire AlCan. It's a small town, but it has all amenities for travelers.
Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church is one of two Quonset hut churches
on the Alcan - the other is in Haines Junction. This one was salvaged
and remade in 1961. |
